Obituary for Verna Ileen Hindson Osteen (Roop)

Sunday, March 10, 2019 Verna Hindson Osteen peacefully went to be with the Lord while listening to “How Great Thou Art” and being surrounded by her loving family at her home.
Born November 18, 1927 at Sprague, WV she graduated in 1945 from Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley. She married John Franklin Hindson II from Oak Hill on August 14, 1949. After living in California for 14 years they moved back to Maple Fork in 1969.
Verna started the first respiratory therapy program in WV at BARH in 1969. She trained many respiratory therapists all over WV.
She and Hank were married 50 years and after his death in 1997 she married Thomas Edward “Ed” Osteen on March 25, 2000. They had 17 wonderful retirement years where they traveled all over the USA.
She was very active in the community and was President of BARH Volunteers Assoc.
She is survived by her four children and spouses, Sally Hylton (Kenny), Frank Hindson III (Diane), Libby Lewis (Jim), Mary Brown (Charlie). Thirteen grandchildren, Shelly Hylton Brightwell, Scott Hylton, Lori Hindson, Christian Lewis, Heidi Lewis Jankowski, Trevor Lewis, Amelia Lewis Beatty, Josh Lewis, Jesse Lewis, Justin Elliott, Griffin Elliott, Andy Brown, Sarah Hylton and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings Jack Roop (Mary Frances), Paul Roop (Mary) and Joyce Calhoun (Billy) and many wonderful nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by John F. Hindson II, Thomas Ed Osteen, and grandson John F. Hindson IV.
Verna was a faithful member of the Packs Branch Baptist Church where Sam Vance had been her pastor for the past 17 years.
Memorials may be sent to Packs Branch Baptist Church Mission Fund.
The family would like to sincerely thank Juan Holliday for his loving and devoted care of Verna for the last 4 years of her life.
Services will be Sunday, March 17th, 2:30 p.m. at Packs Branch Baptist Church with burial to follow at High Lawn Memorial Park.
Visitation will be Saturday evening, from 6-8 pm at High Lawn Funeral Home in Oak Hill.
